Abia Sea Port Plan Gains Momentum as Alex Otti Approves Feasibility Study

The government of Abia State has taken a major step toward expanding maritime infrastructure and economic development in South Eastern Nigeria following plans to develop the proposed Azumini–Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor.
Governor Alex Otti disclosed the development after receiving a delegation from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited led by Mr. Nicolas Liu.
According to the governor, discussions focused on the proposed sea port project and its potential impact on trade, transportation, and regional economic growth.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Otti said:
“We received a delegation from the China Harbour Engineering Company Limited led by Mr. Nicolas Liu, where we discussed the proposed Azumini – Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor project in Abia State.”
The governor also confirmed that his administration has approved an immediate feasibility study for the project, emphasizing the need to fast-track implementation timelines.
“I have granted approval for an immediate feasibility study on the project. While the company initially suggested a six to seven-month timeline, I have directed that the study be completed within a shorter period so that progress can be accelerated.”
Push for Federal Approvals Begins
Governor Otti revealed that the Abia State Government will simultaneously begin the process of obtaining the necessary federal approvals required for the maritime initiative.
These approvals are expected from:
- The Presidency
- The Nigerian Ports Authority
- The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy
He further noted that technical assessments would be carried out at the proposed project location to determine long-term viability and infrastructure requirements.

“Alongside the study, we will begin the process of securing approvals from the Presidency, Nigerian Ports Authority, and the Federal Ministry of Blue Economy. I have also encouraged the team to visit the proposed site to assess its viability, given its proximity to the High Sea and the technical requirements such as dredging.”
