Abia Sea Port Plan Gains Momentum as Alex Otti Approves Feasibility Study
The governor also confirmed that his administration has approved an immediate feasibility study for the project, emphasizing the need to fast-track implementation timelines.
The government of Abia State has taken a major step toward expanding maritime infrastructure and economic development in South Eastern Nigeria following plans to develop the proposed Azumini–Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor.
Governor Alex Otti disclosed the development after receiving a delegation from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited led by Mr. Nicolas Liu.
According to the governor, discussions focused on the proposed sea port project and its potential impact on trade, transportation, and regional economic growth.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Otti said:
“We received a delegation from the China Harbour Engineering Company Limited led by Mr. Nicolas Liu, where we discussed the proposed Azumini – Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor project in Abia State.”
The governor also confirmed that his administration has approved an immediate feasibility study for the project, emphasizing the need to fast-track implementation timelines.
“I have granted approval for an immediate feasibility study on the project. While the company initially suggested a six to seven-month timeline, I have directed that the study be completed within a shorter period so that progress can be accelerated.”
Push for Federal Approvals Begins
Governor Otti revealed that the Abia State Government will simultaneously begin the process of obtaining the necessary federal approvals required for the maritime initiative.
These approvals are expected from:
- The Presidency
- The Nigerian Ports Authority
- The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy
He further noted that technical assessments would be carried out at the proposed project location to determine long-term viability and infrastructure requirements.

“Alongside the study, we will begin the process of securing approvals from the Presidency, Nigerian Ports Authority, and the Federal Ministry of Blue Economy. I have also encouraged the team to visit the proposed site to assess its viability, given its proximity to the High Sea and the technical requirements such as dredging.”
Potential Economic Impact on South East Nigeria
The proposed Azumini Sea Port project is expected to boost commercial activities in the South-East by improving access to maritime trade routes and reducing pressure on existing ports in other parts of Nigeria.
Industry analysts believe that if completed, the project could:
- Improve regional logistics and transportation
- Support local manufacturing and exports
- Create jobs and investment opportunities
- Strengthen Nigeria’s blue economy sector
Governor Otti expressed confidence that the project could significantly transform Abia State’s economy and contribute to national maritime development.
“The project has the potential to transform Abia State’s economy and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s maritime development. With strong commitment, proper funding, and strategic partnerships, we can make the Azumini Sea Port a reality.”
Strategic Infrastructure and Regional Development
The sea port initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve infrastructure and economic competitiveness in the South-East region. Stakeholders have long argued that increased maritime access could unlock industrial growth and encourage private sector investment.
Experts also note that inland waterways development may improve cargo movement and reduce transportation costs for businesses operating across southeastern Nigeria.
Governor Otti concluded by thanking the visiting delegation and expressing optimism about the next phase of the project.
“I thank the team from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited for their presentation and look forward to positive outcomes from the feasibility study.”
Why the Proposed Abia Sea Port Is Key
If successfully developed, the Azumini–Obeaku Sea Port could become one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the South-East in recent years.
The project may:
- Expand Nigeria’s maritime capacity
- Open new trade corridors
- Improve regional connectivity
- Drive long-term economic growth in Abia State and beyond
As feasibility assessments begin, attention will now shift to regulatory approvals, environmental studies, and funding partnerships that could determine the pace of implementation.
