The leadership crisis within the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has taken a dramatic turn following the announcement by Chika Edoziem, the Switzerland-based Head of the 3rd Administration of the Directorate of State (DOS), of the suspension of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as IPOB leader and Director of Radio Biafra.
The development comes amid ongoing debates over leadership, strategy, and the future direction of the movement.

The excerpt of the Statement of the dissolution of the 3rd Administration of IPOB Directorate of States (DOS) headed by Chika Edoziem:
“The primary duty of any administration entrusted with the affairs of IPOB is to protect the movement, safeguard its integrity, defend its members, care for those who suffer persecution because of their commitment to the cause, and advance the strategic objectives laid down by Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Regrettably, the 3rd Administration fell short of these sacred obligations in several fundamental respects.”
Below is the statement of the suspension of Nnamdi Kanu as the Leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and director of Radio Biafra as released by former DOS head, Chika Edoziem:
The Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra has indefinitely suspended the Office of the Leader of IPOB and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both previously held by Nnamdi Kanu, pending further notice.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of the Directorate of State, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, the leadership said the suspension was intended to safeguard the movement’s operations and mission.
“Considering the enormous responsibility placed upon the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra to safeguard our operations and mission, protect IPOB family members worldwide, especially those in Biafraland, and prevent any security breach or emergency in Biafraland, the Directorate of State of IPOB has suspended indefinitely and with immediate effect the Office of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and the position of Director of Radio Biafra previously held by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu until further notice.”
According to Edoziem, the decision to suspend Kanu followed a DOS meeting held on June 17, where an intelligence report from “IPOB’s M-Branch” was reviewed regarding an alleged meeting between Kanu and officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) at Sokoto prison.
He stated that the group is concerned that Kanu’s movements and communications are being closely monitored by the DSS, adding that some prison-related communications had allegedly led to the arrest and deaths of IPOB members.
Edoziem further alleged that there were plans to establish a new militia aimed at instigating violence in Biafraland and weakening the IPOB structure by targeting its leadership.
He said the suspension was also necessary to prevent individuals from committing crimes or carrying out actions in Kanu’s name, which could expose members to arrests, torture, or death.
He added that the move would help stop “reckless assumption of authority” and prevent unauthorised persons from acting under the suspended office of the IPOB leader.
According to him, any criminal activity carried out in the name of the suspended office would not be attributed to IPOB, but to those behind such actions.
“IPOB shall henceforth not be held accountable for actions of individuals or groups not holding any active position within the organisation or authorised by the Directorate of State,” the statement added.
What This Means for IPOB
The suspension announcement represents one of the most significant internal developments within IPOB since the movement’s formation. The decision raises questions about leadership authority, organisational structure, and the future direction of the movement.
The development has generated intense debate among supporters and observers, particularly regarding the relationship between the Directorate of State and the office traditionally occupied by Nnamdi Kanu.
As discussions continue, many stakeholders are asking whether IPOB can maintain its identity, structure, and influence without the direct leadership of its founder and most recognisable figure.
