The Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress have settled for N70,000 as minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

The Minister of information, Mohammed Idris, announced that both the Federal Government and the Labour centre have agreed on N70,000 as salary for the least paid worker in the country.

President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals to pay the minimum wage.

Confirming the approval, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, posted on X:

“President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.

“President Tinubu announced the decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in 7 days,” the statement read.

Before Thursday’s meeting, Federal Government had offered N62,000 as minimum wage while Labour insisted on N250,000 as salary for least paid Nigerian worker.

The Minister also explained that subsequent review of the minimum wage will be every three years and not the current five years.

Idris added that a lot of incentives which are being worked on will follow the new minimum wage.

President Tinubu also promised to use his executive discretion and address the outstanding four months’ salaries owed to university unions.
