Mark 1:1-45 (New International Version & Complete Jewish Bible)
CJB 1 The beginning of the Good News of Yeshua the Messiah, the Son of God:
NIV 1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God,
CJB 2 It is written in the prophet Yesha’yahu, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare the way before you.”
NIV 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” —
CJB 3 “The voice of someone crying out: ‘In the desert prepare the way for ADONAI! Make straight paths for him!'”
NIV 3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ’Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”
CJB 4 So it was that Yochanan the Immerser appeared in the desert, proclaiming an immersion involving turning to God from sin in order to be forgiven.
NIV 4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
CJB 5 People went out to him from all over Y’hudah, as did all the inhabitants of Yerushalayim. Confessing their sins, they were immersed by him in the Yarden River.
NIV 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out
to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan
River.
CJB 6 Yochanan wore clothes of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; he ate locusts and wild honey.
NIV 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
CJB 7 He proclaimed: “After me is coming someone who is more powerful than I- I’m not worthy even to bend down and untie his sandals.
NIV 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than
I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
CJB 8 I have immersed you in water, but he will immerse you in the Ruach HaKodesh.”
NIV 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
CJB 9 Shortly thereafter, Yeshua came from Natzeret in the Galil and was immersed in the Yarden by Yochanan.
NIV 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
CJB 10 Immediately upon coming up out of the water, he saw heaven torn open and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove;
NIV 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.St. Mark 1:
CJB 11 then a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, whom I love; I am well pleased with you.”
NIV 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
CJB 12 Immediately the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness,
NIV 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,
CJB 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by the Adversary. He was with the wild animals, and the angels took care of him.
NIV 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
CJB 14 After Yochanan had been arrested, Yeshua came into the Galil proclaiming the Good News from God:
NIV 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.
CJB 15 “The time has come, God’s Kingdom is near! Turn to God from your sins and believe the Good News!”
NIV 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
CJB 16 As he walked beside Lake Kinneret, he saw Shim’on and Andrew, Shim’on’s brother, casting a net into the lake; for they were fishermen.
NIV 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his
brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
CJB 17 Yeshua said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you into fishers for men!”
NIV 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
CJB 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.
NIV 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.
CJB 19 Going on a little farther, he saw Ya’akov Ben-Zavdai and Yochanan, his brother, in their boat, repairing their nets.
NIV 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.
St. Mark 1:
CJB 20 Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zavdai in the boat with the hired men and went after Yeshua.
NIV 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
CJB 21 They entered K’far-Nachum, and on Shabbat Yeshua went into the synagogue and began teaching.
NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
CJB 22 They were amazed at the way he taught, for he did not instruct them like the Torah-teachers but as one who had authority himself.
NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.
CJB 23 In their synagogue just then was a man with an unclean spirit in him, who shouted,
NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,
CJB 24 “What do you want with us, Yeshua from Natzeret? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are- the Holy One of God!”
NIV 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are —the Holy One of God!”
CJB 25 But Yeshua rebuked the unclean spirit, “Be quiet and come out of him!”
NIV 25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”
CJB 26 Throwing the man into a convulsion, it gave a loud shriek and came out of him.
NIV 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
CJB 27 They were all so astounded that they began asking each other, “What is this? A new teaching, one with authority behind it! He gives orders even to the unclean spirits, and they obey him!”
NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is
this? A new teaching —and with authority! He even gives orders to impure
spirits and they obey him.”
CJB 28 And the news about him spread quickly through the whole region of the Galil.
NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
CJB 29 They left the synagogue and went with Ya’akov and Yochanan to the home of Shim’on and Andrew.
NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
CJB 30 Shim’on’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever, and they told Yeshua about her.
NIV 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.
CJB 31 He came, took her by the hand and lifted her onto her feet. The fever left her, and she began helping them.
NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
CJB 32 That evening after sundown, they brought to Yeshua all who were ill or held in the power of demons,
NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.
CJB 33 and the whole town came crowding around the door.
NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door,
CJB 34 He healed many who were ill with various diseases and expelled many demons, but he did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who he was.
NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out
many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who
he was.
CJB 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Yeshua got up, left, went away to a lonely spot and stayed there praying.
NIV 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up,
left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
CJB 36 But Shim’on and those with him went after him;
NIV 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him,
CJB 37 and when they found him, they said, “Everybody is looking for you.”
NIV 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
CJB 38 He answered, “Let’s go somewhere else- to the other villages around here. I have to proclaim the message there too- in fact this is why I came out.”
NIV 38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else —to the nearby villages —so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”
CJB 39 So he traveled all through the Galil, preaching in their synagogues and expelling demons.
NIV 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
CJB 40 A man afflicted with tzara’at came to Yeshua and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
NIV 40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
CJB 41 Moved with pity, Yeshua reached out his hand, touched him and said to him, “I am willing! Be cleansed!”
NIV 41 Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”
CJB 42 Instantly the tzara’at left him, and he was cleansed.
NIV 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
CJB 43 Yeshua sent him away with this stern warning:
NIV 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:
CJB 44″See to it that you tell no one; instead, as a testimony to the people, go and let the cohen examine you, and offer for your cleansing what Moshe commanded.”
NIV 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the
priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your
cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
CJB 45 But he went out and began spreading the news, talking freely about it; so that Yeshua could no longer enter a town openly but stayed out in the country, where people continued coming to him from all around.
NIV45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a
result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in
lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
Stay blessed. Amen.
