Psalms 2:1-12

WEB: Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot a vain thing?

NLT: Why do the nations rage? Why do the people waste their time with futile plans?

GodsWord: Why do the nations gather together? Why do their people devise useless plots?

WEB: The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his Anointed, saying,

NLT: The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

GodsWord: Kings take their stands. Rulers make plans together against the LORD and against his Messiah by saying,

WEB: “Let’s break their bonds apart, and cast their cords from us.”

NLT: “Let us break their chains,” they cry, “and free ourselves from this slavery.”

GodsWord: “Let’s break apart their chains and shake off their ropes.”

WEB: He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.

NLT: But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them.

GodsWord: The one enthroned in heaven laughs. The Lord makes fun of them.

WEB: Then he will speak to them in his anger, and terrify them in his wrath:

NLT: Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury.

GodsWord: Then he speaks to them in his anger. In his burning anger he terrifies them by saying,

WEB: “Yet I have set my King on my holy hill of Zion.”

NLT: For the Lord declares, “I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, my holy city.”

GodsWord: “I have installed my own king on Zion, my holy mountain.”

WEB: I will tell of the decree. Yahweh said to me, “You are my son. Today I have become your father.

NLT: The king proclaims the Lord’s decree: “The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son. Today I have become your Father.

GodsWord: I will announce the LORD’s decree. He said to me: “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.

WEB: Ask of me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance, the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.

NLT: Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the ends of the earth as your possession.

GodsWord: Ask me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance and the ends of the earth as your own possession.

WEB: You shall break them with a rod of iron. You shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

NLT: You will break them with an iron rod and smash them like clay pots.’ ”

GodsWord: You will break them with an iron scepter. You will smash them to pieces like pottery.”

WEB: Now therefore be wise, you kings. Be instructed, you judges of the earth.

NLT: Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth!

GodsWord: Now, you kings, act wisely. Be warned, you rulers of the earth!

WEB: Serve Yahweh with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

NLT: Serve the Lord with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling.

GodsWord: Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

WEB: Give sincere homage to the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish on the way, for his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.

NLT: Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of your pursuits— for his anger can flare up in an instant. But what joy for all who find protection in him!

GodsWord: Kiss the Son, or he will become angry and you will die on your way because his anger will burst into flames. Blessed is everyone who takes refuge in him.
