NLT: Through these proverbs, people will receive instruction in discipline, good conduct, and doing what is right, just, and fair.
4
KJV: To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
NLT: These proverbs will make the simpleminded clever. They will give knowledge and purpose to young people.
5
KJV: A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
NLT: Let those who are wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. And let those who understand receive guidance
6
KJV: To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
NLT: by exploring the depth of meaning in these proverbs, parables, wise sayings, and riddles.
7
KJV: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
NLT: Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline.
8
KJV: My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
NLT: Listen, my child, to what your father teaches you. Don’t neglect your mother’s teaching.
9
KJV: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
NLT: What you learn from them will crown you with grace and clothe you with honor.
10
KJV: My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
NLT: My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!
11
KJV: If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
NLT: They may say, “Come and join us. Let’s hide and kill someone! Let’s ambush the innocent!
12
KJV: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
NLT: Let’s swallow them alive as the grave swallows its victims. Though they are in the prime of life, they will go down into the pit of death.
13
KJV: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
NLT: And the loot we’ll get! We’ll fill our houses with all kinds of things!
14
KJV: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
NLT: Come on, throw in your lot with us; we’ll split our loot with you.”
15
KJV: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
NLT: Don’t go along with them, my child! Stay far away from their paths.
16
KJV: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
NLT: They rush to commit crimes. They hurry to commit murder.
17
KJV: Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
NLT: When a bird sees a trap being set, it stays away.
18
KJV: And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
NLT: But not these people! They set an ambush for themselves; they booby-trap their own lives!
19
KJV: So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
NLT: Such is the fate of all who are greedy for gain. It ends up robbing them of life.
20
KJV: Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
NLT: Wisdom shouts in the streets. She cries out in the public square.
21
KJV: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
NLT: She calls out to the crowds along the main street, and to those in front of city hall.
22
KJV: How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
NLT: “You simpletons!” she cries. “How long will you go on being simpleminded? How long will you mockers relish your mocking? How long will you fools fight the facts?
23
KJV: Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
NLT: Come here and listen to me! I’ll pour out the spirit of wisdom upon you and make you wise.
24
KJV: Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
NLT: “I called you so often, but you didn’t come. I reached out to you, but you paid no attention.
25
KJV: But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
NLT: You ignored my advice and rejected the correction I offered.
26
KJV: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
NLT: So I will laugh when you are in trouble! I will mock you when disaster overtakes you—
27
KJV: When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
NLT: when calamity overcomes you like a storm, when you are engulfed by trouble, and when anguish and distress overwhelm you.
28
KJV: Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
NLT: “I will not answer when they cry for help. Even though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.
29
KJV: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
NLT: For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord.
30
KJV: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
NLT: They rejected my advice and paid no attention when I corrected them.
31
KJV: Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
NLT: That is why they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way. They must experience the full terror of the path they have chosen.
32
KJV: For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
NLT: For they are simpletons who turn away from me—to death. They are fools, and their own complacency will destroy them.
33
KJV: But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
NLT: But all who listen to me will live in peace and safety, unafraid of harm.”
Stay blessed today. Amen.
